Shaping Futures Changing Lives

Year in Review 2018/2019

Overview:
NSW Health Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) is located in NSW, Australia and is a leader in clinical services, research and education providing a diverse range of public healthcare to more than 946,000 residents in Sydney’s west as well as services to those outside our catchment from specialty statewide centres of expertise.
Brief:
Handle Branding was engaged by the Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) to create their Year in Review. The Year in Review highlights the past year and the plans for the future of healthcare in Western Sydney. With a theme of Positive Change for 2019 we built a theme around ‘Shaping futures, Changing Lives’. This document is produced as apart of their annual reporting and further doubles as community report which is released publicly.

Our engagement for this project was over the course of a 3-month period with content writers, designers, account managers working together with the WSLHD corporate communications team. Handle begun the project with a very stringent process allocating, flat plans, running sheets, contact lists and clear deadlines. This clear structure and management at the beginning of the project allowed for smooth project management and delivery. Our engagement with the WSLHD included copywriting, interviews, content curation, research, fact-checking, approvals, design delivery and project liaison.

Project need:
A vital part of this document was the collection, curation and delivery of content, with the WSLHD playing such an important role in the community it was imperative that the process of research, collection, fact checking, client liaison was adhered to. On the creation of content we also needed it to relate to the audience, to have a tone of voice that spoke to them and not over them. It had to be relevant to them and connected with them in the creative visual tone and in the writing tone of voice.

Visiting the hospitals every day, whether a patient, doctor, supplier, staff member unknowingly you pass by and see this inspiration. Volunteers create, sell and donate their time and efforts into creating patchwork quilts to give to as a present, sense of hope, warmth and community. This is where the inspiration came from for the creative of the theme "Shaping Futures, Changing Lives" it also lends itself to the multifaceted approach that the WSLHD all working together slightly different and bright to connect and serve the people.

Design Challenge:
Connecting the creative and the content with a strong theme created a framework for the  the design and application. This made the challenge of collating the large amount of information over various parts of a health district into one formal report a smooth process.

The total amount of external client contacts on the job where 70+ with a main project lead. We were able to navigate opportunities with their internals creative communications team such as the organisation of photo shoots with executive staff members.

With a wide and diverse audience varying in nationalities and education the importance of creating a document that they could understand was imperative. Colour coding sections, the use of large community driven imagery and graphics were used. Simple icons, info-graphics and numbers relayed information as an overview. The writing of the content had to met the criteria that it could be understood at very young age, with a glossary designed at the back for acronyms often used in the health industry.
The document had to be presented and approved by our client internally to which was then printed and presented to the community at the new Blacktown Hospital opening with no opportunities for delay.

Effectiveness:
Through the project we found that the effectiveness and communication between ourselves and the client, exceed the clients expectations which was relayed back to us.
The organisation and project management as a whole allowed for a clean and effective production and with our use of tools such as flatplans, running sheets, contact sheets, strong creative themes, photography briefs, progress meetings and presentations.
The outcome is a colourful, bold and expressive formal report that was presented to the public. Its announcement was presented during the Western Sydney Health Forum and opening of the Blacktown Hospital Expansion.

The value of Handle Branding working in partnership with the team at the WSLHD really came to the forefront as the project expanded dramatically from the initial briefing.

The effectiveness of the report has been overwhelming, with community members actively having a look and reflecting on the year that was whether they were volunteers, staff members and or the public.
Since its release in late 2019, The Year in Review has been distributed to over 5 leading hospitals and the community. I has been used as a resource by local government. With over hundreds of hardcopies distributed to date, and numerous downloads of the digital version.
